ABSTRACT

Suit Against Pathologists—  The Justice Department has charged the College of American Pathologists with violations of the Sherman Antitrust Act.In a suit filed in the US District Court in Chicago, the Justice Department accused the association of 4,500 pathologists of conspiring to monopolize the $3 billion-a-year medical laboratories. The Justice Department said the pathologists had tried to force out chemists, biologists, physicists, and anyone else who was in the medical laboratory business but not a member of their association.This alleged conspiracy, the Justice Department said, resulted in the public being forced to pay "excessive" prices for blood tests, urinalysis, and other medical laboratory services. The pathologists wanted to take over operation of all commercial medical laboratories "solely for the profit of pathologists," the department charged.Oliver J.
