Nobel Prize-winning virologist Wendell M. Stanley, PhD, is the lastest recipient of the Scientific Achievement Gold Medal of the American Medical Association.
Dr. Stanley was selected by AMA's Board of Trustees particularly for his investigations into viruses associated with human disease. The award is given in recognition of outstanding contributions to the science of medicine by a non-physician.
Dr. Stanley currently is professor of biochemistry, director of the Virus Laboratory, professor and chairman of the Department of Virology, University of California, Berkeley. His studies include extensive work with tobacco mosaic, influenza, and other viruses.
Also honored at the Scientific Awards Dinner, held in conjunction with the 115th Annual AMA Convention, were entertainer Danny Thomas and William B. Castle, MD.
Mr. Thomas, who has played a key role in founding and funding St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Memphis, became the sixth person to receive the AMA Citation of a Layman for
