LETTERS TO THE EDITOR is a department of The Journal. It serves two primary purposes and provides many little additional outlets.
Many communications are received for publication that are too short for satisfactory entry into other areas. When not suited to one of the main categories, they can frequently be converted into Letters to the Editor. Publication of short articles as Letters is done in outstanding manner by the British journal Nature, with excellent effect, and is no novelty here.
The other major function of the LETTERS column is to offer opportunity for expression of opinion, opinion about almost anything, provided that it is of medical interest. There are no established criteria for acceptance or rejection of such letters, except that first, last, and all the way from first to last, they may not be dull!
