This text completes the two volume respiration section of the Handbook series published at irregular intervals by the American Physiological Society. In a prior review of the first volume of this section the reader was advised to await volume 2 if his interests were predominantly clinical rather than exclusively in basic science aspects. That advice was erroneous because, as noted by the editors themselves, it was necessary to produce two volumes of approximately equal size, with the result that many chapters which might well have been included in the earlier volume were arbitrarily placed in this volume.
