ABSTRACT

Social Security Expansion.—  President Johnson plans to ask Congress next year for increased social security benefits and a new federal dental care program for young children of preschool age.The announcement came at a ceremony in San Antonio, Tex, where the President signed into law a two-month extension of the deadline for aged persons to sign up for the medical benefit part of medicare.President Johnson did not spell out his forthcoming proposals or say whether the dental care plan would be a medicare program or financed outside of social security.The President also called for a report on how the country is "tooling up" for the medicare program, which takes effect July 1.In a letter to Health, Education and Welfare Secretary John Gardner, President Johnson said he is "concerned not only" that the nation be ready to launch the program of medical and hospital insurance, under social security,
