ABSTRACT

Medicare Deadline.—  Congress approved a two-month extension of the March 31 deadline for the elderly to sign up for the Part B medicare program of medical benefits. President Johnson made the request a few hours before the deadline expired.Under the medicare law, aged persons who had not enrolled in Part B would have to wait for two years before again becoming eligible for the program under which the individual contributed $3 a month matched by the federal government for physicians' fees benefits.The Social Security Administration conducted an intensive publicity campaign to encourage sign-ups, resulting in enlistment of all but 1 million of the nation's 19.1 million aged persons.Many bills had been introduced in Congress to extend the enrollment period. The Finance Committee secretly voted to extend the deadline to May 20.President Johnson noted that more than 86% of the 19.1 million eligible had actually signed up
