CYTOMEGALIC INCLUSION DISEASE IN LEUKEMIA

ABSTRACT

The incidence of cytomegalic inclusion disease (CMID) in patients with acute leukemia has shown a relative increase in recent years. At the National Cancer Institute, in the ten-year period 1953-1962, autopsy examination of 394 patients with acute leukemia showed two to have complicating CMID. At the same institution, in the 12-month period May 1962 to June 1963, 11 of 71 patients dying of acute leukemia were found to have CMID. The experience at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Hospital and Tumor Institute has been similar. Autopsy materials from 113 children dying of acute leukemia between September 1954 and April 1964 have been reviewed by James Butler, MD, and a single case of CMID found. From the same institution, three cases of CMID in a 12-month period ending April 1965 are reported by Cangir and Sullivan in this issue of The Journal (p 616).
