A program to train physicianscientists will be launched at Duke University Medical Center, Durham, with the aid of a $178,000 grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. The program is intended to develop research competence simultaneously in both the medical sciences and the basic physical and biological sciences.Directing the program will be Thomas D. Kinney, MD, chairman of the Department of Pathology. William L. Byrne, PhD, associate professor of biochemistry, will be associate director.The curriculum is being designed to offer students a combined MD-PhD program over a six- to seven-year span, enabling them to acquire a medical and scientific background tailored to their own needs and special interests.The US Army's Commendation Medal has been awarded to Maj William P.
