Peter Lowe, Scottishman of Glasgow, had several missions in life. The two best remembered are a major responsibility in the founding of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, and the preparation of the first comprehensive text on surgery in English. Since little is known of Lowe's early life, most of the details of his professional career must be deduced from the text of the founding charter by James VI to the Faculty and the biographical items in his medical writings.1 The year and place of Lowe's birth are not available from personal or state records; however, it has been assumed from the data in the preface to the second edition of his Discourse that he was born in the mid-16th century, went to Paris to study when he was about 15, and subsequently qualified as master in the Faculty of Surgery.
