To the Editor:—  Bacterial infection of the thyroid gland is rare; only two cases were seen by Doniach and associates1 in 15 years; "Joll had two cases in 2,000 thyroid swellings."2 Abscess following infection of a preexisting thyroid cyst has been described by Reece.3 Prioleau4 recorded two cases of thyroid abscess in previously diseased glands in two elderly women, 73 and 80 years of age respectively.A fit looking man aged 75, was admitted to the hospital on Nov 15, 1963, having suffered from an attack of respiratory cold and cough for five to six weeks previously. This was followed in about four weeks' time by the appearance of a swelling in the right side of his neck and gradual onset of difficulty in swallowing.
