This monograph, the fifth in a series sponsored by the International Academy of Pathology, includes papers presented at the annual meeting in 1963. Some subjects covered are structure of the thyroid; synthesis, transport, and degradation of thyroid hormone; thyroid-pituitary relationship; pathophysiology of myxedema; thyroiditis; and neoplasia. One chapter deals with experimental thyroiditis and another with immunopathological correlations in thyroid disease. For pleasant reading on subjects not routinely encountered, chapters on comparative pathology and geographic pathology are proffered. Also, techniques and use for autoradiography and fluorescent antibody studies are included.
Several chapters are particularly worthwhile. In the last chapter, dealing with the difficult subject of neoplasia in the thyroid, the gross and microscopic descriptions and illustrations are of excellent quality. Pathologists and surgeons can profit from perusal of this section. The chapter on thyroiditis, which covers succinctly the various types, can be highly recommended.
