Revised guidelines for the primary prevention of stroke emphasize lifestyle modification to reduce risk and highlight the opportunities for emergency department (ED) physicians to identify patients at high risk for an event and to begin interventions.
The guidelines, released jointly December 2 by the American Heart Association and the American Stroke Association, update the organizations' 2006 statement (Goldstein LB et al. Stroke. doi: 10.1161/STR.0b013e3181fcb238 [published online ahead of print December 6, 2010]). The document is affirmed by the American Academy of Neurology as an educational tool for neurologists.
