An overview of oncology care opens this reference devoted to restoring function and quality of life to cancer survivors, many of whom have sustained impairments from their diseases and treatments. Cancer Rehabilitation promotes “proactive and anticipatory survivor-focused health care,” which can lessen the severity of long-term outcomes. Traditionally, older approaches have been disease specific. Examples include speech and hearing services associated with head and neck cancers, colostomy care for patients with cancers of the gastrointestinal tract, and physical and occupational therapy as part of the tools of the sarcoma team. Only pediatric oncology, representing 1% of all malignancies, has a consistent multidisciplinary effort for all disease sites.
