The prognosis of perforating ulcers of the stomach and intestine would seem to improve in the same degree as the practitioner learns to make early diagnosis of these cases and to immediately secure surgical treatment. According to Lennander, who presents a study of his cases of peritonitis following ulcers of the stomach and duodenum on which operations were made during the years between 1889 and 18971, the statistics so far published show that one-fourth to one-third of the cases of perforating ulcers of the stomach or duodenum which are operated on are saved. The first condition in order that a large number of cases of this kind may be saved is, that physicians abandon the idea that their first duty in such cases is to alleviate pain.
