WILL THE PLAGUE REACH AMERICA?

ABSTRACT

Since the outbreak of the plague in China the disease not only has slowly gained headway in that country, but has also extended its ravages toward the south and is now prevailing to an alarming extent throughout India. At first it was thought that on the advent of hot weather the disease in India would be held in abeyance, but such does not seem to be the case. The report from the larger provinces, received last week, announces that many new cases as well as a large number of deaths have occurred. From India the plague extended westward into Egypt, in which country several cases occurred. Should it gain admission into the region surrounding the zone inhabited by those who make their annual pilgrimage to Mecca, it would not be far from Europe or from direct communication with England.
