ABSTRACT

The "Battle of the Clubs" has been almost a standing head in the London Lancet, to such an extent has the medical benefit society movement permeated English society. Here we have less of the evil, for evil it is both to the profession and the public, but it nevertheless exists. One of the latest evidences of its existence we notice in a paragraph in the New Yorker Medicinische Monatsschrift for April, quoted from a German-American drug journal. It says: "A still more striking case of the low estimation of the medical profession is afforded by the Manhattan Medical Service Company. For the sum of $2 a year any person between 15 and 45 years of age can partake of the benefits of this society. These consist in the privilege of obtaining an office prescription of the company's physician on the payment of 25 cents, which will be put up without
