ABSTRACT

The present volume, although a second edition, has been so thoroughly rewritten in the light of a more mature experience as to form, practically, a new work. The author's wide experience enables him to speak with authority, and much of the matter is provided from his own personal records. A marked conservatism pervades the work which, on the whole, is commendable. Concerning the value of the X-rays, he says: "While the X-rays have been of interest and value in showing details of certain fractures, especially at the wrist, elbow and ankle, yet it can not fairly be said that they have yielded much information of practical value which could not have been obtained by palpation. Probably their usefulness will be increased by improvements in methods and apparatus, but at present the information which they give needs to be sifted with great care from among many misleading appearances."
