STATE REGULATION OF MEDICAL COLLEGES AND MEDICAL EDUCATION.

ABSTRACT

One of the encouraging signs of the times is the evident interest in medical education taken by those outside of the profession. The latest is contained in the report of Prof. Delos Fall, State Superintendent of Public Instruction of Michigan. His recommendations are based on the results of a study of reports made to him by those appointed to inspect business and medical colleges. The following are his recommendations regarding medical colleges:

A standard of preliminary education should be required, and a board created to examine all students before entering upon the study of medicine. Some safe, uniform standard for graduation ought to be fixed and insisted upon as a condition precedent to a license to practice medicine. The financial solvency and stability of each institution should be more carefully guarded and insisted upon. Medical colleges should not be chartered in small towns where clinical and hospital facilities, so necessary
