USE AND PRESCRIPTION OF ALCOHOL.

The Woman's Christian Temperance Union has issued a circular to phvsicians asking their aid "in the efforts being made to remove as far as possible all tendencies and temptations toward the formation of the drink habit." It particularly requests physicians to warn patients against the home prescription of alcohol and the use of proprietary medicines containing alcohol and other narcotic drugs. The circular would, however, be more effective with the medical profession generally did it not imply in other statements it contains, that alcohol has no value under any conditions as a medicine. There are, we know, physicians of acknowledged reputation who hold this view, but there is a much larger number, most of them, we believe, in full sympathy with the objects of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, who maintain that it has its uses and that in certain morbid conditions nothing can well supply its place.
