Oberlin, Ohio, August 1, 1902.

To the Editor:  —In the issue of The Journal of July 26, I see a reference made to an article by R. Beard, University Lecturer on Comparative Embryology, Edinburgh, in the London Lancet of June 21, which would appear to be a new theory as to the cause of cancer. I think this theory is not new, as essentially the same causes were suggested by me in an article entitled, "A Brief Speculation Upon Morbid Growths," published in the Cleveland Medical Gazette (now the Cleveland Medical Journal) of June, 1891.
