ABSTRACT

This is a second edition translated from the fourth German edition of a work which, as the editor says, has had a great influence on physiologic thought both here and abroad. It is written in a style which makes a subject usually rather unattractive to the majority of medical readers actually and positively interesting. While we can not say how closely the translator has followed the German text, she has put it into attractive English. The great abundance of references and their dates show that the work has, in the main, been brought well up to include recent acquisitions on its subject. The author's ideas seem to be in accordance with what we believe to be the best thought on the subject at the present time and his views on the somewhat discussed question at the present time of the utility of alcohol for the human organism are such as
