THE KIDNEYS IN TUBERCULOSIS.

ABSTRACT

The most interesting feature of the second annual report of the Henry Phipps Institute for the Study, Treatment and Prevention of Tuberculosis in Philadelphia is the question of the condition of the kidneys in tuberculosis. The study was made in fifty-nine cases of advanced tuberculosis of the lungs which came to autopsy at the Phipps Institute and one private case in which the lung condition was practically cured. Altogether there were sixty autopsies carefully made. The present investigation is a continuation of a clinical study of the urine made three years ago by Dr. Flick, the director of the institute, and Dr. Joseph Walsh, in which tubercle bacilli were found in the urine in fortyfour out of sixty cases of lung tuberculosis, the bacilli being carefully differentiated from other acid-fast bacilli by the use of alcohol in addition to Gabbet's solution.
