ABSTRACT

CALIFORNIA. 

Personal.  —Dr. Perry F. Bullington, Oroville, has been elected president of the Board of Health of Butte County.—Dr. J. De Barth Shorb and wife, Los Angeles, left for Europe May 2.

Distribution of Medicine Samples.  —The city trustees of Chico have passed an ordinance prohibiting the distribution of samples of medicine, either by hand or by throwing into yards, where children might find and eat them.

Vital Statistics for March.  —During March, 1,950 births, 2,523 deaths and 1,471 marriages were reported. The mortality of the month is equivalent to an annual death rate of 16.1 per 1,000. Tuberculosis, the principal cause of death, caused 474 deaths; diseases of the circulatory system, 330, and diseases of the respiratory system, 307, of which 231 were due to pneumonia. Of the epidemic diseases, meningitis caused 37 deaths; measles and influenza, 32; typhoid fever, 19; diphtheria, 17; and smallpox, 7.
