Elsewhere5 appears an account of the trial of Dr. Joshua E. Sweet, one of the six members of the faculty of the Department of Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania, charged with wanton and unnecessary cruelty to dogs. Indictments were brought under the state law forbidding cruelty to animals. The principal witness of the prosecution was a former employee of the university, who testified that the cruelty consisted in the character of the food fed to the dogs, but who was forced to admit on cross-examination that he kept for his own profit eight hundred dogs and fed them on the same food. The other leading witness for the prosecution was a woman member of the local society for the prevention of cruelty to animals, who fainted on the witness stand when forced, under cross-examination, to contradict her direct testimony.
