—The syncytium is one of the epithelial layers of the chorionic villi. It is of fetal origin; this has been proved by the fact that in men and children neoplasms have been found of which syncytial tissue formed one of the component parts. Peters,1 Minot2 and Marchand3 have demonstrated conclusively that the syncytium is derived from the primitive ectoderm and mesoderm or trophoblast.
