ABSTRACT

The fifth edition of this well-known work, although bearing evidence of considerable emendation, represents about the same purposes as did the earlier editions; it aims to occupy an honorable place among the text-books in use in the schools, and is intended to be in a sense an introduction to Holmes' System of Surgery. The general arrangement of the work has not been disturbed, except as regards the chapter on Diseases of the Eye, which has been omitted as requiring too much of the limited space of the entire treatise were it emended so as to fairly represent the present status of ophthalmic surgery. In other respects the editor has endeavored to bring the work up to the standard of our present knowledge of surgery without altering the general character of the work.
