It was not created by law, has never had the support of law, nor has it ever asked for it, but was formed upon the experience and example of other countries within and by the medical profession of this country. It originated in the New York County Medical Society, in January, 1817, upon a design and proposition of Dr. Lyman Spalding to prepare for and call together a general convention of delegates from incorporated medical bodies to meet in Washingington on January 1st, 1820.
