THE TREATMENT OF LEPROSY WITH NASTIN

Any hopes that were based on the employment of nastin, a bacterial fat recommended by Deycke Pasha and Reschad Bey in the treatment of leprosy,1 fail to find support from the experiences of Dr. Walter R. Brinckerhoff and Dr. James T. Wayson with six cases, three of the tubercular type and three of the tuberculo-anesthetic type, treated in Hawaii, and reported in a recent brochure2 issued by the U. S. Public Health and Marine-Hospital Service. The patients were all males between 10 and 40 years of age. The treatment was continued for periods of from five to fifteen months. It was found that the prolonged administration of small doses had no apparent effect on the progress of the disease, while larger doses caused such muscular pain as to necessitate a reduction in dose or discontinuance of the treatment.
