USE OF APPENDIX TO SPLICE THE TJRETEE

ABSTRACT

During some recent operations in the pelvis, in which the ureter was bared during the dissection, it occurred to me to see if it would be possible to use a healthy appendix to splice the defect caused by any injury of the ureter or by the involvement of an inch or two of it in cancerous disease, requiring the sacrifice of that portion. I found that I could bring the appendix over this place in the ureter without traction on its mesentery. Since these operations, whenever I have opened the abdomen either for removal of the appendix or for any other operation, I have attempted to ascertain if it were possible to bring the appendix over the ureter. My investigations have confirmed my opinion that it would be possible in a right-sided injury of the ureter to splice the defect with a healthy appendix. So far as I
