Smallpox.
—At Red Bluff 4 cases of smallpox are reported. —At Finley Lake 3 cases are reported.—About a dozen cases are said to exist in the immediate vicinity of Fresno, 3 of which are in Firebaugh.
Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever.
—The schools of Durham have been closed on account of the prevalence of scarlet fever.— Diphtheria is reported to be raging at Roseville, where 20 cases are reported, with 5 deaths.—On account of the presence of diphtheria at Vina the public school has been closed.—Diphtheria is reported to be epidemic in St. Helena and Yountville.

—Dr. Guy Cochran, Los Angeles, has been promoted to chief surgeon of the Salt Lake Road, vice Dr. John R. Colburn, retired.—Dr. J.
