A comprehensive text devoted to performance analysis of positivepressure ventilators is a formidable task, and so the editors should be congratulated for this largely successful attempt.
The distinctive value of this work is contained in three chapters accounting for nearly half the text. "Mechanical Ventilation" is composed of 150 pages that concisely, accurately, and comprehensively discuss mechanical ventilators presently available and have excellent illustrations and schematic drawings. This chapter could have been appropriately named "Everything You Wanted to Know About Mechanical Ventilators but Were Afraid to Ask." Two other chapters, "Physical Principles and Functional Design of Ventilators" and "Ventilator Performance Evaluation," are accurate yet simplified enough to be of value to those who have less than a degree in biomedical engineering. These three chapters make this text an essential reference for all personnel involved with the application, evaluation, or maintenance of mechanical ventilators.
