Beeper Costochondritis

ABSTRACT

To the Editor.  —I'd like to report a previously unrecognized clinical entity, which might be referred to as beeper costochondritis. The patient was a 52-year-old man who consulted us for persistent tenderness at the 10th right costochondral junction. The pain responded to anti-inflammatory agents but tended to recur.At his last visit, he was noted to have a paging beeper on his belt in roughly the right midclavicular line. The patient then revealed that he often experienced contact between his beeper and the lower rib cage, which reproduced the typical pain, especially when he attempted to view his beeper while seated in his automobile with his thighs flexed and seat-belt in place. He has since moved the beeper to a more lateral location with relief of symptoms.
