ABSTRACT

In Reply.—  Many thanks for allowing me to read the very informative and pertinent letters sent by Drs Hayflick and Witkowski. It is quite evident from the content of the correspondence and their personal publications that they would have been infinitely better qualified to judge Dr Carrel's work on tissue culture than I was, when I received the invitation. I greatly regret the incomplete research of the literature, particularly those cited by Drs Hayflick and Witkowski and agree with the latter, that lack of reference to the biography by W. S. and P. D. Edwards was an unfortunate omission.The distinguished Journal of the American Medical Association and its sophisticated readers would have been better served had the perspective on Carrel's tissue culture research been written by an expert equally knowledgeable and one that would have been devoid of nonscientific bias.I confess that I have always regarded Dr Carrel
