Helene M. Cole, MD, is joining the staff of The Journal of the American Medical Association this month as the American Medical Association's sixth Morris Fishbein Fellow in medical journalism.
The 31-year-old physician describes the opportunity as a chance to "come home," in more ways than one, to Chicago, where she grew up.
Cole completed her first year as a clinical pathology resident this spring at the Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis. She is married to a cellular biologist, Michael Yates, who will return to Northwestern University (where he earned his PhD degree) to do postgraduate work, studying protein synthesis.
They are looking forward to being reunited with friends and family and—as Cole puts it—"to once again take advantage of Chicago's fine arts opportunities."
Cole realizes that as far as her career is concerned, she came full circle while in medical school: "I knew I didn't want to be
