Because cystic fibrosis is the most common chronic genetic disease of whites and widely recognized as having protean manifestations, all physicians should be fully aware of its clinical spectrum. Awareness is particularly important if early and accurate diagnoses are to be made and appropriate treatments instituted. Physicians who specialize in the care of persons with cystic fibrosis are quite familiar with the wide expanse of literature available on the topic.
