Medical Educators Confront the Future

MEDICAL EDUCATORS are becoming more aggressive in their efforts to come to grips with the inevitable changes affecting their world. At the annual meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), in Washington, DC, President Jordan J. Cohen, MD, presented a plan for dealing with "a new era of constrained resources and heightened accountability for the nation's health care." The title of the 20-page report, released at the meeting, is Taking Charge of the Future—The Strategic Plan for the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Even as it affirms that "[a]cademic medicine's central challenge is the preservation of its societal missions in the midst of a complex and unduly market-driven transformation of the health care system," the AAMC report states that "[w]e must be prepared to change whatever is out of alignment with contemporary realities, all the while upholding the values and beliefs responsible for our past successes and essential
