The increasing link between the humanities and medicine has received a boost with the establishment, by the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, Rootstown, Ohio, of the first annual national poetry competition for medical students.
For the 1982-1983 year, 560 poems from 224 medical students representing nearly 100 medical schools were judged by a trio of English faculty members from the consortium universities of the College of Medicine: Elton A. Glaser II, of the University of Akron; Robert L. Tener, PhD, of Kent State University, and Michael Finney, PhD, of Youngstown State University. These judges' selections were then sent for final judging to physician-poet John Stone, MD, professor of medicine in cardiology and community health at Emory University College of Medicine, Atlanta.
First place winner for her poem, "The Biologist," a work dedicated to her father, was Julie Dean Fishbein, of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Baltimore.
