ABSTRACT

In Reply. —Dr Johnson appropriately points out some of the difficulties of the current workforce estimates in emergency medicine. The ACEP agrees that current data sources such as the AMA and AOA master files do not accurately reflect the number of physicians practicing emergency medicine today. Dr Kindig points out some of the reasons why such discrepancies might exist. The ACEP is also concerned that accurate data must be available to make accurate workforce predictions for the future of emergency medicine.To date, only crude estimates of the emergency physician workforce are available. If one assumes that there are approximately 5000 emergency departments in the country, and that approximately five FTE physician practitioners are required to staff a department 24 hours a day, then a simple estimate of approximately 25 000 emergency physician FTE practitioners can be easily arrived at.
