There is no comparison between this new, sixth edition, and the last, fifth edition, of this useful text, originally published in 1958 by Dr Manter. Drs Gilman and Winans have completely rewritten and reorganized the text, making this now a splendid overview of the essentials of clinical neuroanatomy and neurophysiology.
Although the contents are organized similarly to previous editions, the present authors have revised all sections, incorporating a number of recent advances that have occurred in our knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. Updated material includes mention of the enkephalins and endorphins and new methods of studying nerve denervation by the Nauta method over the usual Marchi method.
It would have been appropriate to include a brief section on the physiology of the cerebral circulation and on cerebral metabolism, and to at least mention that the carotid and vertebral arteries arise from the heart and aorta
