This book is a treat for several groups of readers. Regionalists will enjoy this remembrance of turn-of-the-century life in the Pacific Northwest. Historians of the American West will have yet another personal account to flesh out their academic histories. Physicians will take special delight in this volume, as they read of one man's progression from novice medical graduate to accomplished country doctor.

The author, Owen Tully Stratton, recorded his observations and reflections in journals written over 30 years, encompassing his life as a medicine show pitchman in the Pacific Northwest from 1898 to 1904 and as a country doctor in the same area from 1906 to 1950. Though he may have tried for publication at an earlier date, his writings were put away and considered by his family to be lost until they resurfaced 35 years after the author's death.
