Medicine: For the Practicing Physician is the second edition of a big textbook of medicine that is different from all the others in that it is completely problem oriented. Dr J. Willis Hurst, the editor-in-chief, said in his preface to the first edition, "It will take time and effort to polish up the start that has been made with this edition, but we are determined to do so." He has indeed come through as promised with a considerably improved product.

The number of editors remains the same, 29, including Dr Hurst. Although there are fewer total pages (1857 vs 1969), the amount of information is larger because the print is smaller and space is better utilized; this does not detract from the appearance or readability of the text.
