In recent years, considerable interest in fetal hemoglobins has been stimulated by scientific and practical considerations. From the scientific point of view, learning about the mechanisms that regulate fetal hemoglobins may provide insights into the mechanisms that control the activity of various genes during development in general. On a practical level, understanding more about fetal hemoglobins may help in the treatment of hemoglobin disorders such as sickle cell anemia and Cooley's anemia.
