ABSTRACT

Understanding and Preventing AIDS: A Guide for Young People is a small, well-written book on the issues of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome and its presentation in our society. With the terms "AIDS," "HIV" (human immunodeficiency virus), and "ARC" (AIDS-related complex) becoming daily items in the world's media, there is a dearth of published material aimed primarily at the younger adolescent population. This guide provides a useful primer to fill this gap for youngsters in grades 5 through 9. The vocabulary is appropriate to this age group, with frequent use of phonetics and clear definitions of biological terms. Excellent graphics used to demonstrate the immune system and its action in infections translate the mysteries of immunolgy to workable concepts—no mean feat for any book!
