ABSTRACT

How do I review this? Let me count the ways: by comparison with the other bible of rheumatology, to which I am a contributor. The 2144 pages of text compare with 1998 in McCarty. The print is approximately the same size, but there is more white space in McCarty. There are 116 chapters as contrasted with 119 in McCarty. Some 416 pages are devoted to basic aspects as contrasted with 317 in McCarty, while 487 pages are devoted to non—disease-specific topics contrasted with 336 pages in McCarty. The books share 22 contributors.

Noncomparatively, one can admire the timeliness of this book, which has been reappearing with singular rapidity so as to make it almost as contemporaneous as a review journal. Given the rapid changes that take place in some areas of research and treatment, such zealousness provides a reward for the reader who can afford to stay up-to-date by obtaining
