ABSTRACT

Physical medicine and rehabilitation as a specialty is 50 years old. In the last few years it has become one of the most significant growth areas in medicine. Ten years ago it was still hard to convince medical students that this was a field to consider. Now all "PM&R" residency programs are filled with topranking students. The appearance of this "new" textbook is therefore highly significant, as it is a descendant of and has the same title as the textbook by Howard Rusk. Howard Rusk was one of the pioneers of this specialty. Therefore, this textbook by the successor of Howard Rusk and the New York University School of Rehabilitation Medicine is a major event.

Dr Joseph Goodgold has produced an entirely new textbook. The authors of the various chapters are leaders in the field from throughout the country. The chapters deal with all aspects of the field of physical
