In Reply.—  I appreciate Dr Spencer's comments, but the fact that the topic of doctor as patient has appeared in only three books in the last three decades makes a statement: we physicians find it difficult to see ourselves as patients, and, thereby, we deny the reality that at some point in our lives we all become patients. When Doctors Get Sick1 may not be the only book of its type but I believe its contribution to our understanding of the human element of illness is truly "one-of-a-kind."
