The title Sports Medicine for the Athletic Female is deceiving, as the book is more a general sports medicine text with a slight emphasis on the female athlete than a text exclusively for the female athlete.
The book is distinctive in that a variety of professionals have contributed—a physician, therapist, trainer, psychologist, dentist, educator, psychiatrist, coach, and podiatrist—giving it a "cosmopolitan" flair.
Although much of the information is not new (eg, Subotnick's chapter, "The Foot in Sports"), this text does present a logically organized overview of the field of sports medicine. Included are such general subjects as famous female athletes, the history of women in sports, and general guidelines for performing the preseason physical examination, including helpful charting schemes for organized athletic team members. Helpful, too, is a discussion of conditions that may require disqualification from competition.
Then follows a discussion of the physiology of exercise, nutrition, conditioning, and rehabilitation.
