To the Editor.
—In answer to a question, Dr Shirley1 discussed a case of "nipple priapism" and this term was later perpetuated in two Letters to the Editor.2,3 This description does not make sense and is further proof of the fact that while we may be technologically superior to our medical forebears, we certainly are culturally inferior. Priapism is a Latin derivative referring to the penis. For anyone to describe the nipple as suffering from priapism is, at best, inconsistent. I would ask that you use your good offices to correct this unscientific description.
