ABSTRACT

This book is the outgrowth of the author's perception that "the successful outcome of any chronic illness is predicated on a critical role of responsibility played by the patient." The book is written for patients and parents who feel a need to share with their physicians some background of elementary knowledge concerning what little is known of biologic mechanisms and the principles of present-day treatment of rheumatic diseases of childhood. Attention is focused on juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA) as an example.

The author uses two chapters to describe JRA and related diseases. The third chapter explores the many questions that may arise in the minds of the patients. Chapters 4 through 7 describe "some useful facts" on anatomy, physiology, immunity, and pathology relating directly to JRA and similar illnesses. Chapters 8, 9, and 10 are a description of the various onsets of JRA. Chapter 11 is a rather thorough description
