Howard W. "Pete" Doan, MD, MPH, 73, former director of the American Medical Association's Department of Hospitals and Medical Facilities, died of heart disease on June 17, in Portland, Ore.
Born March 18, 1907, in La Salle, Ill, Doan received his medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Iowa City, in 1932, and served an internship in Kansas City, Mo. In 1933 he began a 30-year career with the army in which he carried out various medical assignments in this country and overseas. Doan, who held the rank of major general before his retirement, served during World War II as executive officer of the Chief Surgeon's Office under Gen Paul Hawley, MD, Gen Eisenhower's command surgeon in the European Theater. He was also superintendent of Gorgas Hospital, Panama Canal Zone (1953-1956); deputy hospital commander of the Fitzsimons General Hospital (1956-1958); surgeon of the First US Army (1958-1960);
